OLBIAN COINAGE

Coinage in the Greek world emerged from a synthesis of trade needs, religious beliefs and the individual aspects of the locality -- natural resources, metals mined, geographic position. These conditions created coinage characteristics, which were most obvious at their nascent stage. Among the outpouring of early coins from many Greek cities, there was one coinage region possessing rather exceptional features in its early days, Olbia, on the Black Sea's northwestern coast. Olbia's earliest coinage, indeed, is considered to be one of the most magnificent series in Greek numismatics. Founded by the Miletians in the early Sixth Century B.C. at the mouth of the Boog, near its confluence with the Dnieper -- the important intersection of trade routes between Scythia, Asia and the Mediterranean region, Olbia soon became an influential trading and cultural loci of Greek civilization. As early as the 6th Century, Olbians were already using bronze arrowheads to facilitate trade. Bronze dolphins (see # 33-36), made by local settlers, used as sacrificial tokens, meanwhile, were becoming a form of currency.Olbia's first "round" coins were also cast of bronze, and depicted Athena with dolphins on the obverse, and a wheel (star) on the reverse. The design may have been influenced by the early Athenian "owl coinage" (510 B.C. - 480 B.C.). Among the polis' early emissions were large round cast coins, measuring some 67-71 mm in diameter and weighing between 120 to 140 grams. These bore a short legend: PAUS (possibly the name of the city's head council); smaller sized coins were also issued with the same legend. The large-sized coins, analogous with cast bronze Italian Aes, issued almost 200 years later, were called Aes. These huge and very-high relief coins are unique in Greek coinage of the time. Today the large Aes depicting Athena are extremely rare, missing not only from private collections, but also from the largest museum collections, even from the superb British Coin Cabinet's collection of Black Sea Area coinage and the American Numismatic Society collection.

OLBIAN DOLPHINS

These small copper pieces cast in the shape of a dolphin are totally different from other Greek coins. They are made of bronze, but the earliest bronze Sicilian coins appeared about 100 years later. They are cast, but older by over 200 years than the earliest Italic and Roman cast money. Finally, they are made in the shape of a sea mammal, the dolphin (the Greeks considered the dolphin to be a fish). There was no other such money in the Greek world. Bronze dolphins first appeared in Olbia between 550-525 B.C. Apollo-Dolphinium had been the most important god of the Miletian settlers, and the dolphin was the main attribute of this god. Small, cast dolphins at first were made as sacrificial subjects for Apollo, but soon they became currency, employed by the local settlers as a primitive money, circulating in Olbia and vicinity (see # 32-33). Around 430-410 BC., the dolphin issue was taken under control of the polis. Dolphins became flat on one side and an inscription appeared in that area (see # 34-35). These dolphins were issued for a very short time, and they are rare. These fish-coins were the last figure-shaped coins of the Greek world.Bronze dolphins first appeared in Olbia between 550-525 B.C. The Gorgons of Olbia

As a result of Perikkle's expedition to the Black Sea (438/7 B.C.), Olbia joined the Athenian Sea Union and decided to cancel privately controlled coin minting, such as "arrowheads" and "dolphins". In the reformation process, cast Aes were issued with the reverse legend APIXO which is in reality a composition of the first letters for the Greek words for "arrowhead" (APDIE) and fish (IXOYZ). The same legend was also present on government issues of dolphins, which could serve as a weight standard. On the reverse of the Aes, an eagle on a dolphin was depicted, witness to profound changes not only political, but also religious. There were also fractional Aes issues. Among the last Olbian cast bronze issues, were midsized coins of Aes weight, depicting the head of a Gorgon and an eagle on a dolphin (the city emblem). Olbia subsequently switched to struck coinage.

Sorry, due to technical problem both pictures are not available.
Euthydemos acceded to the Bactrian throne by displacing the Diodotid family (who had originally rebelled against the Seleukids) at the death of Diodotus II. According to the ancient historian Polybius, Euthydemos, while besieged by the Seleukid forces of Antiochus III, denied before the Seleukid envoy Telas ever having committed an act of rebellion against his ancestors. Rather, he argued, the rebellion had been instigated by others (Diodotus I), and that while he had assumed power in Bactria, it was by annihilating the descendants of these rebels. Euthydemos' son Demetrius, Polybius tells us, mediated between Antiochus and his father and brought about a reconciliation. Based on his abundant coinage, it would seem that Euthydemos had a long reign. It was during Euthydemos' later reign that Sogdiana broke away from the Bactrian kingdom
