CAFFA - Genoese Colony in Crimea
Around 1266, the Mongols ceded a strip of land to the Genoese of Caffa on which to build a consulate and some warehouses, thus began the Genoese colony of Caffa. In about 1289, the colony came under the suzerainty of the Golden Horde. The Genoese Consul General who administered the colony was then assisted by an emissary from the ruling Khan who ensured that the annual tribute was paid. The Genoese trade in Turkish slaves (for resale to the Mamluks in Egypt), however, angered the Golden Horde khan Toqtai, for it deprived the steppe dwellers of their best soldiers. He besieged Caffa in 1308, but the Italians set fire to their city and escaped. His successor Uzbeg was better disposed to the Genoese and allowed them to rebuild their colony.
When Timur i-leng crushed Toktamish Khan during the 1390's, the power of the Golden Horde waned and the new Khanate of Krim emerged. Until 1420, the real power in the Crimea was Ulugh Mohammed, father of Hajji Girai, who remained nominally subject to successive Khans of the Golden Horde. Seeing the financial benefit, the Khans of Krim largely stayed on excellent terms with the colony. But during the later part of the 15th century, a series of conflicts ended with the sack of Caffa by the Ottoman Turks in 1475. The southern coast came under direct Ottoman control two years later, with a resident pasha in Caffa, bringing an end to the Genoese colony.
The Genoese mint was set up in Caffa at some time between 1380 and 1396. Coins were struck as late as 1471 (perhaps 1475).
